Why We Do Not Ship Raw Sawn Timber
  • Efficiency and Customs Compliance

At Timber Expert, we focus exclusively on shipping dried, processed Siberian Larch products. We have chosen not to deal in raw sawn timber—whether edged or unedged and regardless of its natural moisture content—due to several compelling reasons:

  • Higher Duties: Raw timber is subject to significantly higher customs duties, which not only affect our costs but would also impact the pricing for our customers.
  • Weight Considerations: The weight of raw, moist timber is considerably greater than that of dried wood. This weight difference reduces the shipping volume per cargo, making transportation less efficient and more expensive.
  • Customs and Pass-Through: Processed wood faces fewer issues at customs and has access to more pass-through points, streamlining the logistics and reducing potential delays.
Production and Compliance in Kazakhstan

Our operations are based in Kazakhstan, ensuring all wood products are processed according to high industry standards. By adhering to these standards, we guarantee:

Documentation and Customs Clearance: All necessary documentation and customs clearances are meticulously managed, ensuring a smooth delivery process from our facilities to your project site.

Adaptable Pricing: The price of our timber products can vary slightly, typically by plus or minus €100 to €200, depending on the distance to the delivery location and the specific conditions of the transport carriers at the time of shipment.

Seasonal and Market Considerations

Pricing can also fluctuate with changes in the season and currency exchange rates. We anticipate a shortage of high-quality timber this year, urging clients to plan their purchases in advance. Despite market fluctuations, prices in Russia have remained stable and are expected to continue as such.

Larch Showdown: Siberian vs. European - Which Reigns Supreme in Construction and Durability?

When it comes to choosing the right larch for your construction projects, the distinction between Siberian and European larch is not just about geography—it's about superior quality and performance. Let's delve into the attributes that set these two apart, especially considering the increasing difficulty in obtaining Siberian larch.

Density: Reflecting Growth Conditions

Siberian Larch: This variety boasts a high density, a direct result of the rigorous Siberian climate. This density contributes to increased strength and durability, making it ideal for construction.

European Larch: Features wider annual rings which indicate faster growth. This faster growth results in a wood with lower density, which may not be as robust for demanding applications.

Chemical Composition: Impact on Moisture and Fire Resistance

Siberian Larch: Contains a high concentration of resins, flavonoids, and tannins. These substances provide natural resistance to decay and pests, essential for wood used in challenging conditions.

European Larch: Although it shares a similar chemical composition with Siberian larch, the concentrations are lower, making it less effective against decay and external wear.

Durability: Suitability for High Traffic Areas

Siberian Larch: The dense structure and tight wood grain make it highly resistant to wear and tear, hence ideal for high-traffic areas.

European Larch: Due to its lower density, European larch is more susceptible to damage over time, which could impact its longevity and appearance.

Knots and Bending Strength: Structural Considerations
  • Knots: Knots affect the mechanical properties of wood. Siberian larch has fewer, smaller, and more evenly distributed knots, which enhance its mechanical integrity and aesthetic appeal. European larch, on the other hand, is characterized by a larger number of big knots, which may weaken the wood during drying and use.
  • Bending Strength: Siberian larch excels in bending strength compared to European larch. This is due to the fewer and smaller knots and the higher density of Siberian larch, which together contribute to better resistance to bending forces. This makes it preferable for structural applications where material strength is critical.

Detailed Analysis of Knot Characteristics and Bending Strength in

Siberian and European Larch

In the realm of wood science and construction material analysis, the comparative study of Siberian and European larch reveals significant differences in their knot characteristics and bending strength, both of which are critical for structural and aesthetic applications. This paper delves into these differences to provide a scientific basis for material selection in construction and design.

Knot Characteristics in Larch Varieties
  • European Larch: European larch is noted for having a larger number of sizeable knots. These large knots, while potentially aesthetically pleasing, pose certain challenges. Notably, during installation and further use rather than during the drying process, the knots may become dislodged. This dislodgement can degrade both the visual appeal and the structural integrity of the wood. This phenomenon is primarily attributed to the lower density and lesser homogeneity of the wood’s structure in European larch.

  •  Siberian Larch: Conversely, Siberian larch features a significantly different knot profile. It contains fewer knots, which are smaller and more uniformly distributed throughout the wood. The high density and homogeneity of Siberian larch’s structure ensure that these knots remain intact and do not dislodge easily. This stability not only enhances the wood’s reliability for construction purposes but also boosts its aesthetic value, making it a preferred choice for both structural and finishing applications.

Bending Strength and Structural Integrity

The bending strength of wood is a crucial parameter, especially in structural engineering, as it determines the wood’s ability to withstand loads without deforming. The presence and characteristics of knots within the wood significantly influence this property.

  • European Larch: The presence of larger, more numerous knots in European larch can compromise its bending strength. These knots create points of weakness where stress concentration can lead to reduced load-bearing capacity and increased risk of failure under structural loads.
  • Siberian Larch: In contrast, the superior bending strength of Siberian larch can be attributed to its smaller and less frequent knots. This structural advantage is further supported by the wood’s higher density, which collectively enhances its resistance to bending stresses. Thus, Siberian larch is more suitable for critical structural elements where high strength and durability are essential.

The comparative analysis of Siberian and European larch regarding knots and bending strength illustrates the superior structural qualities of Siberian larch, making it more suitable for high-performance applications. These findings support the preferential use of Siberian larch in construction projects requiring robust, durable, and aesthetically appealing wood materials. For architects, builders, and engineers, these distinctions are crucial in material selection, ensuring that the chosen wood meets the specific demands of their projects.
